The Best Part About Owning Your Own Company:
Last night, I found myself sitting in a hospital chair next to our youngest’s bed for 7 hours, doing nothing but waiting. And it struck me, I wasn’t bored, frustrated, or agitated. I thought, why am I not bored sitting here doing nothing for 7 hours.
I thought back to jobs I’ve done in the past where 20 minutes of work could be boring, and that was actually still doing something at least. Yet here I was, sitting for hours, and I felt fine.
That’s when I started to realised my purpose in that moment was clear, to support my family when they needed me most. It wasn’t about complaining about the wait or finding a way to stay busy. Just being there was enough. It wasn’t boring; it was meaningful.
This realisation made me reflect on why I enjoy running my own business so much. Yes, some of the tasks are similar to things I’ve done in the past, but now it aligns with my purpose:
– Helping my clients succeed.
– Supporting my family with greater flexibility and security.
It reminded me of an interview I heard with Elon Musk. He described running a company as “the worst job” because you’re constantly dealing with problems. The things that are going well don’t need your attention—it’s always the challenges that demand your focus. But because he loves his work and his mission, he keeps going.
Of course, my accountancy firm isn’t on the same level as SpaceX or Tesla, but the sentiment rings true. When your work aligns with your purpose, even the hard parts feel worthwhile.
For me, that’s the best part of running a business—working on something that truly matters.
